Artificial Intelligence As A Collaborative Partner In Architecture: A Paradigm Shift In Design, Sustainability, And Workflow Integration

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry represents more than a technological upgrade; it constitutes a fundamental shift in how architects conceive, design, and collaborate. Moving beyond the narrow view of AI as an automation tool, this paper advances a model of human–machine collaboration in which AI functions as a collaborative partner that augments, rather than supplants, human creativity and professional judgment. Through a thematic synthesis of peer-reviewed literature, industry reports, and professional guidelines published between 2020 and 2026, the paper examines four interconnected themes: the historical evolution of AI in architectural practice; the impact of generative design on architectural workflows and conceptualisation; the contribution of AI-assisted analysis to sustainable and performative architecture; and the ethical challenges of authorship, algorithmic bias, and professional competence. The findings confirm that AI significantly expands the space of design exploration, automates complex analytical tasks, and enables data-driven environmental decisions. However, these benefits carry serious responsibilities: legally ambiguous intellectual property, algorithmic bias that can perpetuate social and spatial inequities, and a widening skills gap that demands urgent reform in architectural education. A particular contribution of this review is its attention to Global South contexts-especially sub-Saharan African practice-where the risks of bias in predominantly Western training datasets are most acute. The paper concludes by proposing a roadmap for responsible AI adoption that retains the architect’s role as cultural and ethical steward.
