Modern Forest Management: Balancing Ecological Constraints, Adapting To Changing Climates, And Social Innovation

Climate change, the growing global demand for wood, and rapid technological advancements are transforming modern forestry and forest management. This article examines current trends in silvicultural systems, governance models, and digital tools to evaluate how modern forestry might enhance sustainable forest management (SFM) and ecosystem resilience. Using structured narrative review to draw on 39 peer-reviewed sources and technical reports from temperate, tropical, and boreal regions, forest planning that incorporates remote sensing, GIS, and AI is discussed using recent peer-reviewed literature and empirical case studies from temperate, tropical, and boreal regions, including data from West Africa, South, and Latin America, as well as transitions to closer-to-nature silviculture (CTN), mixed-species, and community-based management. Findings highlight the importance of participatory governance, learning-orientated institutions, and the ongoing trade-offs between production, biodiversity protection, and social fairness. Recent findings from REDD+ assessments, AI-enhanced monitoring systems, and climate-smart forestry (CSF) initiatives demonstrate both the potential and the constraints of existing technology. Four policy proposals are recommended to enhance tenure security, expand climate-smart forestry, invest in equitable digital infrastructure, and integrate technological innovation into inclusive, landscape-level management frameworks.
