Integrating Nature-Based Solutions Into Urban Housing Developments In Nigeria: A Review Of Strategies, Benefits, And Implementation Challenges

Rapid urbanization in Nigeria has intensified environmental challenges including urban heat stress, flooding, biodiversity loss, and declining residential environmental quality. Conventional housing development approaches often neglect ecological systems, resulting in unsustainable urban growth patterns. Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) have emerged globally as sustainable strategies that integrate ecological processes into the built environment to enhance resilience and human well-being. This paper presents a comprehensive review of literature on the integration of Nature-Based Solutions in urban housing developments, with particular focus on the Nigerian context. The study examines key NbS strategies applicable to housing such as green roofs, urban forestry, permeable surfaces, rainwater harvesting systems, wetlands restoration, passive cooling landscapes, and biodiversity-sensitive design. It evaluates environmental, social, and economic benefits including flood mitigation, temperature regulation, improved indoor environmental quality, enhanced public health, and long-term cost efficiency. The review further identifies major implementation barriers in Nigeria, including policy gaps, limited technical expertise, inadequate funding mechanisms, weak enforcement of environmental regulations, and low public awareness. Findings suggest that integrating NbS into housing developments can significantly improve climate resilience and urban sustainability if supported by appropriate governance frameworks, planning regulations, and interdisciplinary collaboration among architects, planners, and policymakers. The paper recommends the development of national design guidelines, financial incentives for green housing, and inclusion of NbS principles in building codes and professional training curricula. This review contributes to ongoing discussions on sustainable urban development and provides a framework for mainstreaming ecological design strategies into Nigeria’s housing sector.
